On April 9, 2009, at the Passover Seder, St. Paul's and Beit Tefilah issued this statement of solidarity:
A Statement of Solidarity Between Saint Paul's Evangelical Free Church and Beit Tefilah Messianic Congregation
Passover Seder, Maundy Thursday, April 9, 2009WHEREAS…
- God, in his providence, has brought the Beit Tefilah Messianic Congregation to worship at the Saint Paul's Evangelical Free Church in Creve Coeur, Missouri; and
- we both worship the same God, and Yeshua (Jesus), his only begotten Son, our Lord; and
- we are seeing a rise in anti-Semitism in our day, including the desecration of synagogues in France, Belgium, England and the US; the rise of radical Islam, including militant branches of Hamas and Hezbolla; continued unrest in the Middle East; a change in political climate in the United States; and nations throughout the world turning against Israel; and
- this anti-Semitism includes not only the hatred of the Jews, but the hatred of the God of the Jews; and
- the Protestant Church in Germany, during World War II, was largely silent during the persecution of the Jewish people; and
- some notable Protestant theologians of the past have made derogatory and prejudicial remarks about the Jewish people; and
- God has a special calling on the Jews, and has promised that "all peoples on earth will be blessed" through the Jews (Genesis 12:8), and the Jewish people "have been entrusted with the very words of God" (Romans 3:2); and
- God has a special calling on the Gentiles to "provoke to jealousy" the Jewish people (Romans 11:14).
WHEREAS…
- we are living in increasingly desperate times, where social and economic unrest may lead to persecution of various minority groups; and
- the persecution of true believers-those who are in Jesus and the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob-is on the rise throughout the world, with over 200 million Christians around the world suffering from persecution; and
- there are signs all around us that we are living in the last days, including the return of Israel to its homeland, the restoration of the European Union, the intrusion of technology, and the unification of the world's financial markets; and
- at the last Passover Seder that Jesus celebrated with his disciples, on Maundy Thursday, he gave us a new command: "Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:34-35).
THEREFORE…
- We, the members of both the Saint Paul's Evangelical Free Church and the Beit Tefilah Messianic Congregation, pledge to stand together in the Lord and on his Word, and to stand together against the devil and his schemes, encouraging one another to put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18).
- We pledge to stand with one another in solidarity during these perilous times.
- We look to the Holy Spirit to enable us to love one another as challenged by the Apostle Paul in Romans 12:9ff: "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. {10} Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. {11} Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. {12} Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. {13} Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. {14} Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. {15} Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. {16} Live in harmony with one another… {21} Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
